Dangerous Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – Top Five Techniques to Avoid

Many people involved using internet marketing techniques can easily get “caught up” utilizing methods that seem to be great to get placed high on the search engines. However, everyone should be mindful that there is such thing as illegal SEO techniques that should be avoided like the plague:

1. Pagejacking- Pagejacking is stealing copyrighted content by copying someone else’s webpage and submitting it to the search engines as your own to achieve high rankings. This technique is lazy, sloppy, and you will eventually get caught and banned by search engines.

2. Trademarked Keywords- It is best to avoid using or bidding on trademarked keywords at all cost regardless if they are used in META tags, domain names, or just piggy back off of big name brand ads. Other companies trademark certain keywords, whether short-tailed or long-tailed, for obvious reasons of not letting others “cash in” on their market. This method is in violation of the federal trademark law and you will get sued by the owner(s) of those trademarked keywords and/or penalized.

3. Deep Linking- When deep linking, instead of providing a link and linking it to its home page, it is directed to specific content on a website sub-page. This method too can violate copyright laws, especially if deep linking is being conducted without the site’s permission or is prohibited.

4. Keyword Spamming- Keyword spamming is when a keyword is overutilized on a webpage, script tags, and content. This is crossing the line of making your site keyword rich versus keyword overkill, when keywords are being used so many times to where content becomes uninformative. Keyword spamming also entails hiding keywords in any shape or creative form so that only the search engine sees them and not the viewer. This method too will get your site penalized or banned by search engines.

5. Spamexing- Spamexing (A.K.A link farms or spamdexing) is when a network of websites interlink with each other. Spamexing also entails a network of websites providing links that directs to a collection of websites. This illegal strategy is popular in achieving high rankings for websites that, according to search engines, have not earned high ranking through providing good content and quality.

Final Note: Be sure that the marketing techniques you use are ethical. Do your research, especially if it is a method you are not completely sure about. Search engines are becoming more and more sophisticated, making it easier to get banned, penalized, and sued.
